What Shurfoot is, and how it’s different
Shurfoot does two jobs at once: it soaks up a spill and leaves an anti-slip surface behind. That second part is the whole point. Plenty of things soak up oil. Far fewer leave you with grip instead of an oil slick.

The material is natural volcanic ash, a mineral that’s porous and gritty by nature. Volcanic glass forms when molten rock cools too fast to grow crystals, so it comes out as sharp, sponge-like particles.

It’s authorized for USDA- and CFIA-inspected facilities, and it handles the slick mix of blood, fat, and washdown water behind what one butcher bluntly calls a “slippery meat floor.” A generic ash or coir off Amazon isn’t automatically legal on a regulated food floor – which is why the authorization matters.
Commercial kitchens and food trucks
Grease you don’t have time to mop mid-service. The dustless formula and small 3 lb bag fit tight spaces. One user, K. Wolf, called it ideal for “the inside of a food-truck, where grease ending up on the floor could be a real problem that you just don’t have time to clean up.”
Warehouses, cold-storage docks, and barns
Condensation plus forklift traffic is a slip waiting to happen. A light “salt and pepper” dusting adds grip on wet or icy patches, roughly 1 lb per 100 sq ft. Garages and shop floors
Oil and antifreeze on bare concrete, the classic job. Highway and spill response
Poured around a wreck, volcanic ash contains fuel and hydraulic fluid, suppresses the vapors, and isn’t a fire hazard itself. Road and municipal crews use it for exactly this.
Walk-in freezers and icy indoor floors
Great for indoor ice, not for an outdoor lot – and the people who’ve used it are honest about that split:
- Indoor ice and freezers: in a walk-in, it “would come in very handy.”
- Outdoor ice on a lot or driveway: one reviewer flat-out says “just go buy a bag of plain old sand.”
- Concrete steps in winter: the one outdoor exception – pumice is gentler than rock salt, which corrodes concrete over time.
Bottom line: indoor ice and freezers, yes. A whole icy parking lot, use sand. We’d rather tell you that than sell you the wrong thing.
How to use it: pour, sweep, done
Dump cat litter on a spill and you’re back with a mop anyway, working a nasty paste across the floor. With Shurfoot you pour it, sweep it, and you’re done – no mopping, no mush.
- Pour it over the whole spill. Cover the puddle completely, plus a little past the edges. For traction on a dry-but-slick area, a thin “salt and pepper” dusting is enough (about 1 lb per 100 sq ft).
- Work it in. Push it around with a broom so every bit of liquid makes contact. On porous shop concrete with a fresh spill, grind it in with your heel or a board. Skip the grinding on finished, tiled, or food-plant floors.
- Sweep it up. Once it’s soaked through, sweep the saturated powder into a dustpan and bag it. Dispose of it based on what you cleaned up.

How much to use, and how long to wait
For a wet spill, use enough to bury it – a puddle that shows through means you need more, and skimping is the main reason people think an absorbent “didn’t work.” Most everyday spills are ready to sweep within a few minutes once the powder looks saturated. For a heavy, soaked-in oil stain, leave it down longer – even overnight – so it keeps wicking oil out of the pores, then sweep and reapply if the spot’s still dark.
What not to do
- Don’t heap it on for traction. A thick pile of loose granules becomes its own trip hazard.
- Don’t grind grit into a finished or food floor. Grinding is a bare-concrete trick only.
- Don’t expect it to erase an old stain. A set-in, dried stain needs a degreaser after.
- Don’t rinse a chemical spill down the drain. Fuel, solvents, and chemicals are hazardous waste.
Why it beats cat litter, sand, and clay
Cat litter, sand, and flour all “sort of” work – and all three leave you worse off than a real absorbent.
The difference you can see: clay swells to a slick mud the moment it hits water, while volcanic ash stays dry and gritty and keeps its footing. That’s the whole reason it’s on food-plant and shop floors instead of a bag of litter.
One honest note: there’s no neutral, third-party bake-off ranking these head to head. Most “X times more absorbent” numbers come from the vendor selling the winner.

Is it safe and compliant?
